Our story

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, our sound & lighting business faced significant struggles. In search of alternative ways to support ourselves in the long run, I turned to my cherished collection of bonsais that I have carefully cultivated over the course of 30 years.

Recognising the value & beauty of these miniature trees, I saw an opportunity to share my love & skills of bonsais with other enthusiasts and discovered there was a bonsai community that are eager to connect & learn from each other.

What started as a means to overcome the challenges of the pandemic has now become a thriving business that brings joy and inspiration to the countless bonsai enthusiasts I’ve been lucky to meet.

I organise monthly markets and biannual exhibitions with fellow bonsai experts in Melbourne, where bonsai enthusiasts can come together to showcase their trees, exchange ideas, and learn from each other.

My ultimate goal is to inspire more people to embrace bonsais, regardless of their age or gender, and eventually obtain a collection of mature bonsais that can be passed onto the next generation.

Main types of Bonsais

Bonsai trees are miniature trees that are grown in pots and trained to resemble full-sized trees found in nature. While there are many different types of bonsai trees, each has it’s own unique characteristics, foliage and aesthetic appeal. Here are some popular types. Choose the one that speaks to you and let the art of bonsai begin.

Juniper Bonsai: One of the most popular and classic bonsais. The Juniper bonsai is an evergreen coniferous species that has needle-like green foliage and a rugged bark that is often reddish-brown in colour. They require good drainage and prefer bright, indirect sunlight. They are versatile to shape, easy to care for and a great beginner option.

Ficus Bonsai: This tropical tree has dark green glossy leaves and twisted trunks, making it a stunning option for indoor decoration. Ficus bonsai trees are known for their resilience and adaptability. They are fast-growing and have a distinctive oval-shaped shiny leaf. The trunk has a distinctive pattern with aerial roots that can be trained over time to create a unique and visually appealing appearance.

Pine Bonsai: Pine bonsai trees are evergreen, coniferous and have long needles. They are slow-growing and require a lot of patience. The trunk of a pine bonsai can develop an aged texture, and over time, it can develop an interesting and intricate bark pattern. Pine bonsais require plenty of sunlight and should be watered carefully to prevent over or under-watering. They can be grown both indoor and outdoor settings, but outdoor growing is recommended because of the coller temperatures required for optimal growth.

Maple Bonsai: With it’s delicate leaves and stunning autumn colours, the maple bonsai is a beautiful and intricate tree. The bark of a maple bonsai is usually smooth with a light brown colour, providing a sleek and elegant appearance. Maple bonsais need proper sunlight to develop their leaves’ hues and should be watered regularly to prevent the soil from drying out. Maple bonsais requires more specialted care and attenton, but it is well worth the effort.

Elm Bonsai: This popular tree species has a sturdy trunk and exposed roots that create a dramatic effect. They are a popular variety of bonsai that is known for it’s hardiness and flexibility. The elm bonsai also has small oval-shaped leaves that turn bronze in autumn.

Flowering Bonsai: These trees are prized for their beautiful blooms and fragrant scents. These trees are popular among bonsai enthusiasts due to their colourful flowers that provide a stunning aesthtic display. Flowering bonsais come in various species including azaleas, bougainvillea, cherry blossoms and among others. The type of soil used for flowering bonsais should be well-draining to prevent root rot and ensure healthy growth. Flowering bonsais provide a beautiful colourful addition to any indoor or outdoor space, even in the smallest of areas.
